CANCELED: 2nd Annual Filipino-American Community Fair

Message to community organization leaders:

9/2/2014 Update: This event has been canceled.

The Filipino Young Professionals of Washington, DC (FYP-DC), with support from the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition (PHC), would like to formally invite you and your organization to participate in our annual event this fall focused on building the Filipino-American (Fil-Am) community in the metropolitan DC area. In particular, this event will focus on:

"connecting the local college Fil-Am student organizations and professionals with local Fil-Am, Asian Pacific Islander (API), and community partner organizations."

In October 2013, we had 12 community organizations and nine collegiate student organizations with over 90 people in attendance at the Philippine Embassy. We were very appreciative that H.E. Ambassador Cuisia was supportive of this event as it was another way in which students could see what was taking place in the greater community.

The Filipino Young Professionals of DC (FYP-DC) hosted the 1st Filipino-American Community Fair at the Philippine Embassy. Minister Emil Fernandez of the Cultural Section of the Philippine Embassy provided opening remarks.

The event is a “Community Fair.” This fair is much like that of a "Career Fair." However, instead of having companies, we want to introduce the variety of Fil-Am or APA organizations to the local college organizations. At the fair, each community organization will have a table to promote its mission. We will invite all the Fil-Am student organizations across nine colleges and universities in the metro DC area to learn about the different resources they have in and around DC. They can begin to develop connections and see who they might be able to collaborate with throughout the year.

Furthermore, this event gives community organizations an opportunity to network with each other. Having the leaders of our community organizations in one room can lead to meaningful dialogue about what direction or what steps our Fil-Am community needs to take in the coming years.

While community building efforts have been taking place for years in the DC area, we believe this type of event could help spark new ideas and re-energize many of us. Our hope is to reinforce the idea of our community working together and to engage with our future community leaders, the college students. We need to encourage them to take what they learned during their college experience and transition their energy to the greater community once they enter the working world. These students can transform our Fil-Am community in a positive way. Let's empower them to do just that!

*This year, we do plan to include businesses who would like to provide internship or job placement opportunities. In addition, this will be a public event however our promotional efforts will be focused on the Fil-Am student organizations.

We kindly ask that if you are interested in hosting a table for your organization, to please fill out the form below by August 15th. We have a limited amount of space, so please reply as soon as possible to reserve your spot. There is a $50 table fee which helps offset the cost of food for attendees. We will post updates as they become available.
