2015 FYP-DC Executive Board Candidates

President Candidate: Abbie Elliott (Get to know me: Facebook Page)

Please describe your qualifications & experience that make you a candidate for the position you are running for.

As the eldest with two brothers, I fell naturally into leadership. But, even to this day, I have never had to raise my voice to get my point across. As a leader, whether personal or professional, I believe it is important to respect the people with whom you are dealing.

To me, leadership means having an open mind, considering any input and to always be growing/developing. In terms of qualifications, I have held leadership positions at in high school and college--and was the recipient of a full MBA scholarship. Professionally, I have worked for a diverse group of organizations--like The White House Commission on Remembrance, The American Statistical Association and AOL/The Huffington Post. I've gotten to cover presidential inaugurations and White House Correspondents' Dinners by writing for various publications. Currently, I am the Communications Manager for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

What would you like to see FYP-DC accomplish in 2015?

FYP-DC is, essentially, the embodiment of who I want to be. I am looking to expand my local network, get more in touch with my Filipino-American heritage and make a contribution to causes that relate to that heritage. I have had a remarkable and exciting experience working with FYP-DC leadership and members over the past year.

In order to accomplish my goals and those of FYP, I want to look to our members (and the local community) to drive what programs we should continue to or begin to participate in. Naturally, I believe that this outlook will help to drive FYP-DC membership. This will allow our members to benefit from an ever-expanding network of like-minded, philanthropic Filipino Americans.

Final Pitch. What message do you have for FYP-DC members and the community-at-large?

In the immortal words of Journey (who is now led by Filipino Arnel Pineda): "I'm forever yours...faithfully."

Vice President Candidate: John Paul Abenojar (Get to know me: Facebook Page)

Please describe your qualifications & experience that make you a candidate for the position you are running for.

In terms of qualifications, I strongly believe that I have what it takes to be the Vice President of this organization because of my education and experiences. During high school I was a cadet captain of the Junior Reserved Officer Training (JROTC) of Morse High School 5th Battalion and also the Editor in Chief of the newspaper Tiger Pride and Vice President of Science Olympiad and French Club. In college and during my graduate studies I have held several leadership positions in campus organizations such as Lead Mentor of the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University, Campus Ambassador and Vice President of the Asian Coalition student Council at the University of Michigan. I am currently in charge of two committees, Quality Assurance for psychotropic medication management and grievance processing in my present job. I also have experience in organizing events where all different organizations come out together for a benefit cause.

What would you like to see FYP-DC accomplish in 2015?

I would like to see FYP-DC becoming more engaged in 2015 with Filipino organizations within the local universities in the area because I feel that by doing this it will help our organization increase our membership. Also, I want the organization to be more active in performing community services that help the Filipino-Asian Community locally, nationally and hopefully back home in the Philippines. This would include an involvement with and collaboration with other organizations.

Final Pitch. What message do you have for FYP-DC members and the community-at-large?

As individual members and as a community it is very important for us to actively participate in making a difference and reaching out to those that are less fortunate not only here in the U.S. but also for our kababayan back home. If I have the opportunity to get elected I would make this one of my priorities. President Kennedy once said "There Is No Better Exercise for the Human Heart than Reaching Down and Lifting Someone Else Up".

Vice President Candidate: Mark Arevalo (Get to know me: Facebook Page)

Please describe your qualifications & experience that make you a candidate for the position you are running for.

I have been involved with FYP for the past four years and served as a social chair for the past two years. I have also been a member of the the championship Dragon Boat Team for the past 4 years. I was also the founder/president of the Filipino Student Association at my university. I was also an executive board member for a Filipino Professionals organization in New York City before I moved to the DC area.

What would you like to see FYP-DC accomplish in 2015?

I would like to see FYP-DC continue the excellent programs that were implemented over the past two years. I would like to continue to grow the membership and develop exciting opportunities for the Filipino community to come together to learn about culture, professional development as well as networking with fellow Filipinos professionals.

Final Pitch. What message do you have for FYP-DC members and the community-at-large?

Since I first moved to the DMV I've always enjoyed being part of FYP-DC and have met some of the best people I know through this group. I honestly care about the future of the organization and want to help in the continued success of FYP.

Treasurer Candidate: Rose Aruta (Get to know me: Facebook Page)

Please describe your qualifications & experience that make you a candidate for the position you are running for.

My qualification and experience entails over 5 years of administrative work along with independent assistance to the marketing department for a computer based company.

At the moment my work profession is to provide support to the legal department within my organization which requires being detail oriented and being organized.

Currently I am working on a two year certificate program with the George Washington University to figure the logistics and compile gatherings for large groups in hopes to utilize my skills for fundraisers and other large organization functions. My next project will be to support Actress/Film Producer Anne Welles (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0919909/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) for her wrap up party in May 2015 for the movie "Zombie Ted".

What would you like to see FYP-DC accomplish in 2015?

I would like to see FYP-DC collaborate with other organizations and show support not just only for their own organization, but for others as well. Build bridges, opportunities, and for me to act as a liaison to connect one organization to another.

I am currently involved with the DC Asian Pacific American Film group (http://www.apafilm.org/about/) as the Event Management Director and our mission and goals is to raise awareness to the public regarding Asian related media. We cater towards the young generation as well as adults.

Final Pitch. What message do you have for FYP-DC members and the community-at-large?

Although I may have a busy/hectic schedule, I will do my best to participate every now and then with the FYP events and to strengthen any weaknesses the organization may have as a whole.

Thank you for taking the time and effort reading my qualifications for this position!

Secretary Candidate: Paolo Sian (Get to know me: Facebook Page)

Please describe your qualifications & experience that make you a candidate for the position you are running for.

-Executive Board Member of the Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) at University of Maryland College Park from 2005-2006
-The Islander Newsletter Editor for FCA
-Proficient in creating and maintaining WordPress websites
-Active in social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
-Detail oriented

What would you like to see FYP-DC accomplish in 2015?

I would like to see FYP-DC gain more members in the DMV area especially within the alumni members of the Filipino Cultural associations in colleges in the DMV area. I believe that since those members are alumni and are no longer in college, they could be looking for more opportunities to join Filipino organizations outside of the college realm. They could also be looking for more young professional organizations (such as FYP-DC) that are Filipino-run.

Final Pitch. What message do you have for FYP-DC members and the community-at-large?

I just recently joined FYP-DC this past Spring 2014 and I've enjoyed what you guys have to offer so far. I paid the membership and have not regretted it. I like FYP-DC's objective in trying to educate and promote the Filipino culture all across the DMV area and the camaraderie that surrounds this group.
