Kat Chow (moderator) is a journalist covering race, ethnicity, and culture for NPR’s Code Switch team. In this role, Kat is responsible for reporting and telling stories using social media, sparking conversations online, and blogging. Prior to coming to NPR, Chow worked with WGBH in Boston and was a reporting fellow for The Cambodia Daily, an English-language newspaper in Phnom Penh.
Adriel Luis is a self-taught musician, poet, curator, coder, and visual artist who believes imagination is key to transforming cultural paradigms. Originally from the California Bay Area and recently living in New York City and Beijing, Adriel is currently based in Washington, DC as the Curator of Digital and Emerging Media at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.
Shefali S. Kulkarni is the Audience Engagement Producer for BBC News, based in the Washington bureau, with ten years of experience in the journalism industry. Prior to working for BBC News, Shefali was the social media editor for Newsweek and has also worked as a digital producer for PRI’s The World based out of WGBH in Boston, covering the immigrant and refugee community for the radio program's vertical Global Nation. Shefali was also a health care policy reporter for Kaiser Health News, where her work was published in The Washington Post, NPR’s Shots blog, and other news outlets across the country. She has worked at The Daily Beast, The Village Voice, Willamette Week, and Washingtonian magazine. Shefali is a long-time member and the Vice President of the South Asian Journalists Association.
Dia Bui is a Vietnamese queer women of color. She is also a community organizer, youth advocate and artist. Dia has more than 10 years of experience working on issues including immigrant rights, racial justice, access to higher education, women’s rights, health equity, LGBTQ equality, and economic justice. Originally from Los Angeles, she moved to the DC metropolitan area five years ago bridging her passion for community organizing with effective policy change for social justice. Her lifelong commitment to empowering young people is rooted in her own experiences growing up in a refugee family living in a low-income, immigrant neighborhood. Dia is a poet, storyteller and comedian and has performed in multiple cities across the country. Most recently, she joined the first cast of In Laughing Color, a life-affirming comedy ensemble of Trans and Queer people of color and black performers. Dia embraces culture, writing, and music as tools of learning and empowerment.
